Big plays bring Falcons third straight win

Foley football defeats Milaca by 21

The big plays have begun to come in earnest for the Foley Falcons football team.

Receiving highlight-reel touchdowns both through the air and with their multi-pronged rushing attack, the Falcons exceeded the 40-point mark for the second straight week, downing the Milaca Wolves 42-21 Oct. 9 at Claffy Field in Milaca.

Foley pulled ahead against their area rivals in the same manner that led to dominant wins against Little Falls and Apollo in the previous two weeks: getting stops on crucial downs on defense and making the opposition pay on offense. After halting Milaca’s opening drive at their own 30-yard line, the Falcons spent the next five minutes grinding out yards before capping off the punishing possession with a 17-yard pitch-and-catch from quarterback Carson Brenny to tight end Teddy Rasmussen off play action.

That senior duo struck again at the start of the second quarter. Following yet another fourth-down stop from the defense — this time on 4th-and-1 — Brenny uncorked a magnificent deep ball off a play fake to Rasmussen for a 33-yard score, putting Foley up two possessions.

Milaca, though, attacked the Falcons’ physical defense in a way Little Falls and Apollo could not, taking chances with one-on-one matchups on the outside and finding success. Wolves quarterback Trent Cramlet connected with senior wideout Soren Hasselberg on a 53-yard pass play downfield before finding Hasselberg again for a 4-yard touchdown.

Special teams fueled Foley’s next drive, as Jacob DeMarais took the ensuing kickoff all the way to Milaca’s 30-yard line. DeMarais was not done, as he remarkably converted a 3rd-and-20 with a 21-yard run, setting the Falcons up in the red zone once more.

This time around, it was running back Brody Kipka who found paydirt, scampering into the end zone from 19 yards out to build Foley’s lead back up to two touchdowns.

The action only picked up from there. Milaca used a 33-yard pass play and a huge fourth-down conversion to extend its next possession, finishing it off with a 3-yard touchdown plunge with only 28.2 seconds remaining in the first half.

That proved to be far too much time for the red-hot Falcons offense. Rasmussen returned a short kick to midfield before Kipka slipped through the arms of multiple Wolves defenders on his way to a 50-yard touchdown, giving Milaca no chance to respond.

The Wolves did apply more pressure when the second half began, with Hasselberg reeling in a 15-yard touchdown about midway through the third quarter. As was evident throughout the entirety of the high-scoring affair, Foley was not deterred. DeMarais again took a kickoff deep into Milaca territory, with Kipka pushing forward with multiple carries before finishing the drive off with a 6-yard touchdown run.

Foley’s defense held down the fort from there. Defensive back Ayden Ziegenhagen picked off a contested jump ball in the end zone in the third quarter, while linebacker Roman Rudnitski snatched an errant Milaca pass at the Wolves’ 48-yard line and took it to the house for a game-sealing pick-six.

Now 4-2 with three straight wins under their belt, the Falcons will face Jordan at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at DeRocher Field in Foley.
